Green Day es una banda estadounidense de rock originaria de Oakland, California y formada en 1990 por Billie Joe Armstrong y Mike Dirnt, a los que se sumó un año más tarde Al Sobrante para fundar Sweet Children, que más tarde sería renombrada Green Day. Este grupo fue uno de los impulsores de la segunda oleada punk, tras los años 1980, cuando grabaron en 1994 el álbum Dookie, su tercer disco. Actualmente está formada por Billie Joe Armstrong (voz y guitarra), Mike Dirnt (bajo y coros) y Tré Cool (batería). Los miembros de apoyo son Jason White (guitarra), y Jason Freese (teclado y saxofón).
Con sus dos primeros discos tuvieron alrededor de cinco millones de ventas cada uno. Sin embargo esta cifra se triplicó (con más de quince millones de copias) con Dookie, siendo este su álbum más exitoso. Con su siguiente álbum, Insomniac, obtuvieron las mismas cifras que con sus primeros discos, cinco millones de ventas. Green Day ha vendido aproximadamente sesenta millones de álbumes alrededor del mundo, y ha ganado diversos premios musicales como los tres premios Grammy que consiguieron al mejor álbum alternativo por Dookie, mejor álbum de Rock por American Idiot y la Grabación del Año por "Boulevard of Broken Dreams".
Tras el lanzamiento de American Idiot en 2004, el grupo permaneció inactivo durante cinco años (a excepción del lanzamiento de diversos sencillos) hasta el lanzamiento de su último álbum, 21st Century Breakdown, el 15 de mayo de 2009.
Los orígenes de la banda se remontan a 1982] cuando Billie Joe y Mike, dos muchachos de diez años de Rodeo se conocieron y se hicieron amigos. Ambos compartían una afición especial por los grupos de la corriente punk que se desarrollaba en Berkeley en ese momento (Mr. T Experience, Operation Ivy, Crimpshrine) y por otros grupos de punk de finales de los 80 como Social Distortion y Husker Du.[7]
Influenciados por estos grupos, decidieron formar su propia banda de pop punk, llamada inicialmente Sweet Children, junto a John Kiffmeyer (más conocido como Al Sobrante, quien había tocado previamente en la banda vecina Isocracy) en la batería en el año 1989. El grupo debutó en el restaurante Rod's Hickory Pit (donde trabajaba la madre de Billie Joe) ante unos 30 amigos. Tiempo después el grupo se asentó permanentemente en Berkeley, uno de los epicentros de la corriente punk de California.[7]
En ese mismo año grabaron su primer EP con Skene! Records, llamado simplemente Sweet Children. Este contenía tres canciones originales: "Sweet Children", "Best Thing In Town" y "Strangeland" (siendo esta, con su pegadizo coro, la que más se acerca al estilo que cultivaría el grupo después). La cuarta canción del EP era un cover de la famosa "My Generation" de The Who. En ese año grabaron con el nombre de Green Day el EP 1,000 Hours, que fue bien recibido en la escena punk y hardcore de California.[7]
En 1990, la banda cambió su nombre oficialmente a Green Day (el nombre de una canción escrita cuando eran todavía Sweet Children), y, después de una demostración bajo la lluvia para Lawrence Livermore, firmaron con su casa discográfica, Lookout! Records. El primer álbum de Green Day, 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, fue puesto a la venta ese mismo año, recopilando sus trabajos anteriores (1,000 hours, 39 Smooth y Slappy). Poco después de su lanzamiento, Al Sobrante deja de ser el batería para retomar sus estudios en la universidad.[7] Fue entonces cuando reclutaron a Tré Cool, vecino del fundador de Lookout! Larry Livermore y batería de Lookouts, quien sigue siendo el batería del grupo hasta ahora. Armstrong y Dirnt ya conocían a Cool de diversos conciertos siendo aun Sweet Children. El día después de la graduación en el instituto John Swett (en el que Mike se graduó, y Billie Joe fue expulsado el día después de cumplir 18 años) empezaron una gira en el bibliobús del padre de Tré a lugares como Atlanta, Los Ángeles, Nueva York y Canadá.[7]
El segundo álbum de la banda fue Kerplunk, lanzado el 17 de enero de 1992 por Lookout!, su último disco con la banda. La versión en CD incluía cuatro pistas del EP Sweet Children. Este album es aun más suave y accesible que el anterior, con canciones pausadas como "Christie Road" y "No One Knows". Con Kerplunk la fama del grupo trascendió las fronteras de California, haciendolos muy populares en todo el pais. El disco vendió 500.000 copias, una cifra muy buena para un grupo de punk en una firma independiente.[7] y para hacer dinero extra en la banda ya que en la cual es indispensable

Billie Joe Armstrong
En 1988, Billie Joe formó una banda llamada Sweet Children con su amigo Mike Dirnt y un compañero de clase, Al Sobrante. Se cambiaron el nombre a Green Day en marzo de 1989, justo antes de sacar el primer EP "1,000 Hours", en Lookout Records.
Él y Adrienne son co-fundadores de Adeline Records, un sello independiente en el que graba muchas bandas del área de la bahía de San Francisco. Tiene proyectos alternativos en su otra banda Pinhead Gunpowder que está bajo el sello de Lookout! Records, y the foxboro hot tubs banda en la que participan también Mike Dirnt y Tré Cool, bajista y baterista de Green Day
Ha tocado con bandas como U2, The Influents, Corrupted Morals, Rancid, the Lookouts, blink-182, Goodbye Harry, y Blatz.
Durante los inicios de Rancid Billie Joe Armstrong, fue segundo guitarrista de la banda también Compusó Con Tim Armstrong la canción "Radio" del álbum "Let's Go"(Que es una de las canciones Preferidas de los seguidores de Rancid) pero decidió centrarse en su propio proyecto y entró Lars Frederiksen actual guitarista de la agrupacion
Mike Dirnt
Conoció a Billie Joe Armstrong en 1982, un par de meses antes de que el padre de éste muriera. Mike fundó Sweet Children con Billie, y luego Green Day en 1989. La primera conversación entre Billie y Mike trató sobre música. A Mike Dirnt le pusieron su seudónimo en el colegio, cuando hacía como si tocase el bajo. Hacía el sonido del bajo y sonaba algo así como "Dirnt, dirnt, dirnt" así que los niños le pusieron Mike Dirnt, que es su nombre artístico hoy en día.
Mike tocaba anteriormente un bajo Gibson G-3, pero durante Nimrod, Billie Joe se compró un bajo de precisión Fender Precision Bass. Mike pidió a Fender si le podían fabricar un bajo P-bass personalizado y el resultado es el modelo 55' P-bass de 2004.
Fue el bajista de Screeching Weasel en el álbum How to Make Enemies and Irritate People, y fue vocalista en el debut de Squirtgun (también de Lookout).
Tré Cool
Trè, al igual que Mike Dirnt, tiene un papel menor en las letras. Ha sido autor de pocas letras de los discos editados de la banda, como Dominated Love Slave (en Kerplunk), All by Myself, canción escondida en el álbum Dookie, después de "F.O.D", o "Rock and Roll Girlfriend", cuarta parte de "Homecoming", canción del álbum de la banda "American Idiot", dedicada a Torry Castellano, su entonces novia.
Ha escrito letras para canciones que no forman parte de ningún álbum, y son consideradas "rarezas", como "Food Around the Corner", "Like a rat does cheese", "Boys in the bathroom stall" y "Billie Joe's Mom" Trè no solo sabe tocar la batería, también sabe tocar la guitarra (en las presentaciones en vivo de sus canciones él se encarga de esto y Billie Joe Armstrong pasa a la batería y el acordeón
